Firefighter FAQ's

How long does it take to become qualified as a minimum staffing firefighter?

This depends on what certifications you have (free training is provided), the availability of classes and how motivated you are. Typical time from application to being cleared to ride on your own (minimum staffing) can range from 6 months to 2 years.

All applicants regardless of training will be taken on as probationary members for 6 months or until training is complete.

What operational roles are available?

We are always looking for firefighters to staff the engine however we also have a need for motivated individuals to step up and become Drivers, Lieutenants, Captains and even Chief.

These leadership roles require skill, motivation, and training, all of our officers are also certified EMT's in addition to  being fully qualified firefighters.

What are the required classes to become a firefighter at MVFC?

The basic courses are listed below and will all be covered during a standard fire academy however you will occasionally see individual courses offered and these will be posted as soon as they become available. The average length of time for a full academy class is about 6 months.

Hazmat Operations, Firefighter I, Firefighter II, RIT (Rapid Intervention Team), and Mayday as well as and intro to airport firefighting class due to the City having it's own airport.

Is there anything I can work on while waiting on a fire academy class to open?

Yes! The most important thing to do is show up to the fire station as often as you can to work with the duty crews. This way you will get to know who you are riding with and they can get to know you as well as it's the best way to learn about the apparatus and tools we use.

There are also some prerequisites courses that can be taken care of. First being the NIMS courses (100, 200, 700, 800) these can take anywhere from a few days to over a few weeks depending on how much time you have available, most are  only a few hours in length.

What does the process look like to become a member of the fire company?

Steps to becoming a MVFC firefighter:

1. The first and most important step is to apply by filling out an Application!

2. After you application is received our HR team will reach out to you to schedule an interview.

(After this is complete you will considered an applicant / probationary member for the next 6 months while you work towards becoming an active firefighter)

4. Next you will need to schedule and complete a firefighter physical.

5. Upon successful completion of your physical you will be issued a set of bunker gear so you can train and attend classes.
